Pilgrimage to England Decription
The 2024 pilgrimage to England offers us a chance to visit places associated with some of the most influential English-speaking Christians. Among them:
Julian of Norwich (1343-1416)
The author of the Cloud of Unknowing (late 1300s)
Walter Hilton (1340-1396)
Poet John Donne (1571-1631)
C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)
Evelynn Underhill (1875-1941)
Poet Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)
and others...
We will travel from London, to Norwich, to Cambridge, to Oxford, and back to London over 9 days. Along the way we will have opportunities to visit St. Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey in London and to have ample time in each to gently and patiently enter into prayer and exploration of those magnificent worship spaces. In Norwich we will visit St. Julians and also Norwich Cathedral — again in a contemplative pace allowing for time to pray and soak in the hallowed spaces. In Cambridge our focus will be on places connected with Walter Hilton. Then on to Oxford where we will focus on C. S. Lewis, and (hopefully) attend evensong at Magdalen college. After fully exploring Oxford, we will return to London for our concluding celebratory dinner the evening before departure home.
So often when we are reading the writings of spiritual greats we are having to do that with a translation into English. It is a great blessing and gift that we have within the English language, saint's of the church whose poetry, mystical visions, and practical advice about the spiritual life which we can study. It would be very hard to name a more influential apologist for Christian faith in the 20th century than C.S. Lewis. The poetry of Milton, Donne, Hopkins, and Eliot are each very deep in theological content too. Evelyn Underhill, Walter Hilton, and Julian all offer important glimpses into the contemplative / mystical side of spiritual formation.
