Opening Sentences  — Psalm 51:15 & Lamentations 3:22-23

Hymn - Come Risen Lord

Psalms

65 A song of springtime

2 To you our praise ís due
in Zion, Ó God.
To you we pay óur vows,
3 you who hear óur prayer.

To you all flesh wíll come
4 with its burden óf sin.
Too heavy for us, our óffenses,
but you wipe them áway.

5 Blessed those whom you choose ánd call
to dwell in yóur courts.
We are filled with the blessings of yóur house,
of your holy´ temple.

6 You keep your pledge wíth wonders,
O God óur saviour,
the hope of all thé earth
and of far distánt isles.

7 You uphold the mountains with your strength,*
you are girded wíth power.
8 You still the roaring of thé seas,
(the roaring of théir waves,)
and the tumult of thé peoples.

9 The ends of the earth stand ín awe
at the sight of yóur wonders.
The lands of sunrise ánd sunset
you fill with yóur joy.

10 You care for the earth, give ít water;
you fill it wíth riches.
Your river in heaven bríms over
to provide íts grain.

And thus you provide for thé earth;
11 you drench íts furrows;
you level it, soften it wíth showers;
you bless íts growth.

12 You crown the year with yóur goodness.
Abundance flows in your steps;*
13 in the pastures of the wilderness ít flows.
The hills are girded with joy,*
14 the meadows are covered with flocks,*
the valleys are decked wíth wheat.
They shout for joy, yes, théy sing.

Praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy´ Spirit
both now and fórever.
The God who is, who was, and is come
at the end of thé ages.

Silent Reflection

90 God’s eternity and the shortness of life

1  O LORD, you have been our refuge*
from one generation to thé next.
2  Before the mountains wére born
or the earth or the world bróught forth,
you are God, without beginning ór end.

3 You turn us back into dust*
and say: “Go back, children of thé earth.”
4 To your eyes a thousánd years
are like yesterday, come ánd gone,
no more than a watch in thé night.

5 You sweep us away like á dream,
like grass which springs up in thé morning.
6 In the morning it springs up ánd flowers;
by evening it withers ánd fades.

7 So we are destroyed in yóur anger,
struck with terror in yóur fury.
8 Our guilt lies open fore you,
our secrets in the light of yóur face.

9 All our days pass away in yóur anger.
Our life is over like á sigh.
10 Our span is seventy´ years,
or eighty for those who áre strong.

And most of these are emptiness ánd pain.
They pass swiftly and we áre gone.
11 Who understands the power of yóur anger
and fears the strength of yóur fury?

12 Make us know the shortness of óur life
that we may gain wisdom óf heart.
13 LORD, relent! Is your anger fórever?
Show pity to yóur servants.

14 In the morning, fill us with yóur love;
we shall exult and rejoice all óur days.
15 Give us joy to balance our áffliction
for the years when we knew mísfortune.

16 Show forth your work to your servants;*
let your glory shine on théir children.
17 Let the favor of the LORD be úpon us:
give success to the work of óur hands
(give success to the work of óur hands).

Praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy´ Spirit
both now and fórever.
The God who is, who was, and is come
at the end of thé ages.

Scripture Reading  — Genesis 1:20-23

20   And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” 21 So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

Canticle - The Song of Zechariah — Benedictus

Through your holy prophets, you promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us,
to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember your holy covenant.
[Refrain]

This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship you without fear,
holy and righteous before you,
all the days of our life.
[Refrain]

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
to give God’s people the knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.  In the tender
compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall
break upon us, to shine on those who
dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
[Refrain]

Morning Collect

Lord, you are the resurrection and the life:  yours is the life worth having, the life that really is life, the life which persists beyond every deadly moment.  Though we know that with you all things are possible, we often side with Martha and Mary in the hours of tribulation and assume that death is the final chapter of life.  Show us again the power of your love which raised Lazarus from his deathly tomb.
Lord God, on this fifth day of the week we offer our glad praise and thanksgiving for the sea and all its creatures.  We join the Psalmist in wonder at a sea swarming with creatures beyond number.  Today, whether we walk on dry land or sail upon the waves, may we marvel joyfully in your creation — you who saint Columba called, “Lord of the elements.”
Preserve us this day from the sin of gluttony — both from the impulse to eat and drink more than we need, and also from that peculiar form of gluttony which finds expression in the insistence that we receive our food precisely when we want it, and prepared precisely as we imagined it should be.
Give us the virtue of Temperance and self-control.  Teach us to enjoy pleasures well by taking them in moderation.  Help us not only to perform good acts for the right reasons, but more, may we desire to do them.
We are attentive, Lord, keeping vigil for you - for we expect to encounter you in all the most unlikely places.  For our part we will keep you ever before our eyes today, and we ask that you would bless us by showing us those things you desire us to see.  All this we pray in the name of our resurrected Lord, who is himself, the resurrection and the life.  Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Dismissal

                                            [Romans 12:8-10]

Leader: Let your love be genuine, hate evil, hold securely what is good,  love each other in holy affection.
Respect each other, let the Spirit enlighten you, and serve the Lord!
Rejoice in hope, have patience with suffering, and be always in prayer.

People: Amen.

A sign of peace is exchanged as we depart.
